APPLE THEME

Apple Theme Activities:

In Room 103 we spend a great deal of our "apple theme" time talking about Johnny Appleseed and reading books about him.

Johnny Appleseed Booklet (Attached below)- I made this with font software that makes lines and spaces for students to write their answers. When you open the file this font will only show up if you have the font - otherwise your computer will asign a font to replace it. You will have to adjust the file to fit your needs.

Torn Paper Apple - tearing paper is a fine motor skill. So many of our first graders just need to build the muscles in their fingers to be better writers.

Apple Investigation - (attached below) Each student brings an apple to school. It is the child's choice of color, type, and size.  I send an e-mail to parents letting them know that interesting apples lead to interesting conversations and great writing activities!

Apple Thumbprints - (attached below) Students draw a tree and add red thumbprints and draw in stems - making the cutest apple trees ever!

Label Parts of an Apple - (attached below) Students write in the parts of an apple on the diagram attached (made by Mr. Harper) I made a copy for the overhead and use it daily - letting different students write one part on the overhead each day - students love to write on the overhead!

Apple Facts - I searched the Internet and learned some very interesting apple facts. Great sites are listed below. Each day we learn a few new facts about apples - as many as time allows!

Crockpot Apple Sauce (directions below) On the last day of our apple unit we make homemade applesauce in a crockpot! Our room sells delicious!

Crock Pot Apple Sauce

Peel and core and slice 8 – 10 apples.

1/2 cup water

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Put all the ingredients into a crock pot or slow cooker. Cook for at least a couple of hours or until apples are mushy. Cool and serve.
